From Structure to Form

This project began as an exploration of architecture through drawing, using the Kirklees College building in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire as the starting point. By sketching and analysing its features... windows, structural details, and ornamental form, I focused on identifying and isolating shapes that might otherwise go unnoticed.

These architectural elements were then simplified and translated into pattern pieces, shifting from rigid, permanent materials into soft, adaptable forms. Through a process of cutting, layering, and assembling recycled fabrics, the work evolved into a series of sculptural garments that reinterpret the language of the building in a wearable context.

Influenced by the experimental approach of designers such as Rei Kawakubo, the project challenges traditional ideas of fashion by prioritising form, construction, and abstraction over conventional garment design. The outcome sits somewhere between fashion and sculpture—objects that carry the memory of place while existing as independent, expressive forms.

This early project continues to inform my current practice as The Rubbish Artist, where I transform discarded materials into sculptural work that celebrates shape, structure, and the potential hidden within the overlooked. It reflects an ongoing interest in reimagining the ordinary—turning everyday environments and materials into something unexpected, playful, and meaningful.
